Reunited in Colorado

“While helping a friend at her 88-year-old mother’s house, my 2-year-old German Shepherd decided to test his skills as an escape artist. We had taken my friend’s mom out to lunch to celebrate her birthday and left Ernie in the backyard, where he has spent ample time previously.

Unfortunately, on this day, he decided to push up the bolt that holds in one side of a large wooden gate door. He then managed to push open the gate just enough to squeeze through, even though the handles are tightly bungee-corded together on the outside and explore the neighborhood unsupervised.

After discovering his absence when we returned from lunch, a frantic search ensued by car and on foot but produced no results in finding Ernie. We decided to a make phone call to the local animal services office to seek assistance. Just as I was looking up the number for our vet to see if Ernie’s rabies tag could be tracked, I received an email from AKC Reunite. Someone named Betsy had found Ernie. A phone call to the number provided allowed me to learn that Ernie was retrieved by this wonderful woman and being safely kept at her house just five doors down. I was thrilled to know that the tag Ernie wears from AKC Reunite provided a gleeful ending to what could have been a very bad day.”  -Carol G., Aurora, CO
