The AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers help to create a safe, temporary home-base for at least 65 pets during the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared. The trailers house and deliver essential animal care items including crates and carriers, AKC Reunite microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip scanner, bowls, collars and leashes as well as fans, lighting and a generator, cleaning supplies and maintenance items. These supplies can be used as co-location shelters, where people can evacuate with their pets, as well as emergency animal shelters for displaced animals.

“Atlantic County is extremely grateful to AKC Reunite, the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and the Labrador Retriever Club for providing our Office of Emergency Management with this pet disaster trailer,” said County Executive Dennis Levinson. “The trailer will enhance our efforts to help pets and their owners during times of emergency.”

“This is the 79th trailer donated through the AKC Pet Disaster Relief program. The trailer will serve as a vital tool to provide critical recources for the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management when responding to natural disasters in their community,” said Tom Sharp, AKC Reunite CEO. “Safe, effective pet sheltering solutions are so important following a disaster, and we are pleased that an AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer will be available to assist.”

The purchase of the trailer was made possible by donations from the Labrador Retriever Club, Inc, AKC Reunite and a $100,000 donation from the Kennel Club of Philadelphia earlier this year. The funds from the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s donation were specifically allocated to provide eight AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailers to counties within New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This trailer is the fourth of the eight from this group and will provide materials to help the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management be prepared for potential disaster.

“Our association is pleased to be able to bring such an important resource like the AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer to the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management,” said Wayne Ferguson, President of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. “The trailer will help this organization better assist the people and pets of their community if disaster strikes.”

“The Labrador Retriever Club, Inc. is thrilled to assist in bringing an AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer to the Atlantic County Animal Response Team,” said Fred Kampo, Labrador Retriever Club President. “While the Labrador Retriever Club has helped with several AKC trailers, our organization dedicates this donation in the name of Scott Leonescu. Scott is a New Jersey native and club member who is currently recovering from a severe stoke suffered in June when he was preparing his Labrador to compete in the National Amateur Retriever Championship in Wisconsin. Scott is making tremendous strides and we are all wishing him a full recovery.”
