The Fort Worth Animal Shelter was the recipient of an AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer which was cooperatively donated by nine DFW dog clubs, two national dog clubs and AKC Reunite. As a response to the devastation after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many people stayed in harm’s way because emergency response plans did not accommodate pets.
The trailer will provide Fort Worth and other cities in North Texas the lifesaving resource to help pets and their owners in need when unthinkable events take place. The trailers house and deliver essential supplies such as fans, lighting and generators; cleaning supplies; maintenance items; and animal care items including crates and carriers, AKC Reunite microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip scanner, as well as bowls, collars and leashes. These supplies can be used as co-location shelters, where people can evacuate with their pets, as well as emergency animal shelters for displaced animals.

The purchase of the trailer was made possible by more than $22,000 in donations and grants from the Fort Worth Kennel Club, DFW Metro Golden Retriever Club, DFW Dachshund Club, Dalmatian Club of North Texas, Nolan River Kennel Club, Doberman Pinscher Club of Dallas, Heart of Texas Akita Club , Texas Tri-City Obedience Club, Doberman Rescue of North Texas, The Schipperke Club of America Rescue and Health Foundation, The Basset Hound Foundation and AKC Reunite, the nation’s largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service.

Individuals, corporations and other interested parties can donate to trailer projects in local areas or across the country. Donations are tax deductible and accepted online. Approved organizations that raise a minimum of $1,000 will have their logo featured on the AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer.
