What should I do if I find a pet? 2019-02-20T13:25:46+00:00

It is extremely important to get a loose pet to a protected area and off of the streets for its safety.  If you feel safe, slowly approach any loose animal. Otherwise call animal control for assistance.

Call any phone numbers on the pet’s identification tags, or take the pet to a veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip.

If you take any pet into your home for temporary shelter, keep the pet separate from your family members and pets. You cannot know how any pet will react in an unfamiliar place around new people or pets.

When your pet’s identification number is called in to AKC Reunite, we will immediately call you. We also send text messages and emails to you if that information on your enrollment record. If we cannot connect with you, we will begin reaching out to your alternate contact(s). This is why it is very important that you keep your contact information up to date with AKC Reunite. You can update your pet’s record any time by going online or sending updates to found@akcreunite.org. AKC Reunite’s 24-hour recovery hotline is listed on all AKC Reunite–issued collar tags and collars.
