Mochi’s Mis-Step – Lost in Plain Sight
REUNITED: In a few days
Terry, Mochi’s owner, reported his beloved Pomeranian had “been missing for 30 agonizing hours. As soon as we realized she was gone, we scoured every inch of the house—closets, behind furniture, under beds—you name it, we checked it. We called her name over and over with no response. Eventually, we resigned ourselves to the only logical explanation: she must have slipped through a small gap in the fence and wandered outside, just like she’s managed to do in the past.”
Two days later, Terry returned home from community band practice. As soon as he “opened the door, his other dog, Izzy started barking wildly. Nothing new there. But then… I heard it. A second bark—soft, muffled, unmistakably Mochi’s.” Terry froze! He then “went back outside and recreated the sound that had triggered Izzy. Sure enough, Izzy barked again, and there it was—Mochi’s faint little voice, barely audible, but definitely real. We followed the sound, which seemed to be coming from somewhere near the massage chair… the favorite napping spot for both Izzy and Mochi. No way, I thought. Could she really be…?”
Terry tilted back the chair and Mochi immediately sprang out from underneath, wide-eyed and disoriented but very much okay. “She had somehow gotten stuck underneath the chair—likely crawling under for a nap while it was reclined, then getting trapped when it lowered back down. For 30 hours she’d been stuck, completely silent, with no food, no water—and miraculously, no mess. We’d been in that room countless times. Izzy had even slept in that chair most of the day. But Mochi never made a sound… until just the right moment… But Mochi’s home now, safe and sound—and probably never going near that chair again.”
