Out of the Blue

REUNITED: In a few hours

My wife and I, and Blue’s sister Casey, are beyond grateful to have been reunited with Blue [our eight-year-old Golden Retriever] just four hours after he went missing. I was walking Blue and Casey at about 5:30 AM. It’s been so cold in Philadelphia and Blue had been itching to run, we could just tell.

Somehow, while Casey was “doing her business,” Blue pulled away from his leash. He started to run and honestly, my panic and calling “Blue, Blue!” probably moved him from “fun run” into flight mode.

Casey wasn’t too eager to run, so me trying to run after Blue was like running with a 98 pound anchor around my leg! After four blocks he was gone and I was crushed.

A very kind stranger stopped to help and let me call my wife. She came to the last spot I had seen him and we drove up and down the roads for hours. Fortunately, our friends from Brookline Labs helped calm us down. They were also kind enough to file a report with Animal Care & Control Team Of Philadelphia (ACCT Philly), the animal control agency here in Philadelphia.

As we had given up hope and praying for a miracle, I got a text at 9:10 AM [from AKC Reunite to let me know] that Blue had been found and was at ACCT!! We were beside ourselves with happiness and gratitude for our good fortune – and for having Blue chipped! We were reunited with him at 10:15 AM. He had actually run nearly 5 miles – and acted like this was just all a big fun game.
