  • You will want to transfer your pet’s AKC Reunite record to the new pet owner.
  • There are three ways to initiate a transfer request for a pet:

If you’re planning on traveling outside the U.S. or to Hawaii, your pet must be microchipped and have an International Health Certificate. Before you go, review the USDA requirements to determine which requirements are needed for your intended destination.

Do I need to update AKC Reunite before traveling?2022-04-26T16:25:46-04:00

When traveling with your pet, whether for a short or long period of time, verify your pet’s enrollment information is up-to-date with our Online Records System.

What happens after I submit a pet transfer request?2022-04-29T14:07:20-04:00
  • Once the request is received, AKC Reunite will process your transfer and transfer fee. We will email or mail the Primary Contact currently on file requesting approval of the transfer of the pet’s enrollment out of their name. (We do not share your information with the Primary Contact on file, unless you authorize us to do so.)
  • The Primary Contact has 30 days to respond.
    • The pet’s transfer will be handled accordingly based on whether the Primary Contact approves or rejects the request to transfer the pet’s enrollment.
    • If the Primary Contact does not respond within 30 days, the transfer will be processed. Once received, the entire transfer process can take up to 35 days.

Before moving to a new country, check your pet’s microchip frequency — 134.2, 128 or 125 kHz — and review the country’s pet microchip regulations and requirements.

How long does it take to transfer a pet’s record into my name?2022-04-26T16:34:49-04:00

The pet’s transfer will be complete within 35 days of processing your request:

  • You will receive an email or letter confirming your enrollment transfer request, or notification that your request has been declined.
  • If your transfer is declined, your transfer order payment will be refunded.
