Recovery Service and Enrollment – FAQ2019-03-14T11:49:33-04:00

24/7 Recovery Service & Enrollment

Answers to the most common questions about AKC Reunite’s Lost Pet Recovery Service and Enrollment.

Why should I enroll my pet?2019-02-20T13:28:08-05:00

A microchip without an enrollment is like an ID card with no name or address. Without entering your contact information in our recovery service database, if your pet is lost and its microchip is scanned, we will have no way to reunite you with your lost pet.

How do I enroll my pet?2022-05-04T11:51:58-04:00

You can enroll online or download a paper application to send back to us. If you have three or more pets, use our multiple pet enrollment form for a special discount.

What is a Primary Contact?2023-05-04T09:49:05-04:00

A Primary Contact is the main contact listed on a pet’s enrollment. The Primary Contact has the ability to make updates to their information. Their information is used as verification by Shelters when a pet is owner-surrendered into a Shelter’s care.

Enrollment in AKC Reunite will help the safe return of your pet when they are found, but does not signify ownership.

What does it mean when a Primary Contact is locked?2021-06-17T13:33:49-04:00

Many organizations want to make sure the pets they adopt and sell do not end up in a shelter with the risk of being euthanized. These organizations choose to be the Primary Contact so they can be the pet’s lifeline should something happen to the pet’s owner.

If your organization chooses to be locked as a Primary Contact, you agree to clearly communicate in writing in your Adoption/Sale Contract that you will be listed as the Primary Contact on the pet’s microchip enrollment with AKC Reunite, and the adopter/buyer will be listed as the Alternate Contact.

What is an Alternate Contact?2023-05-05T12:51:48-04:00

An Alternate Contact is an additional point of contact on a pet’s enrollment. When an enrolled pet is found we will call, text, and email each Primary and Alternate Contact listed on the pet’s enrollment record. AKC Reunite recommends including at least one Alternate Contact that resides outside of the Primary Contact’s immediate area in case of a catastrophic event that may cause phone and internet outages in your immediate, affected area.

What does it mean if an Alternate Contact is locked?2023-05-05T12:53:17-04:00

Many organizations want to be an extra safety net to help reunite a lost pet that was under their care at some point in time. Even if the pet is transferred to a new Primary Contact, the organization wants to remain as a guardian to help keep the pet out of harm’s way. Your Sales Representative can set your HUB Account settings so you are locked as an Alternate Contact.

Does my enrollment include a microchip?2022-05-04T11:57:09-04:00

Your enrollment includes our lifetime lost pet recovery service, but does not include a microchip. You may add the microchip number at no additional charge to the pet’s AKC Reunite lost pet recovery service enrollment.

How do I make changes to a microchip enrollment?2020-05-21T14:03:14-04:00

If a pet is enrolled under your name or organization as the Primary Contact, records can be updated through the Online Records System.

First your pet must be enrolled with AKC Reunite’s 24/7 recovery service.  Click here to enroll.

I don’t know my pet’s ID number2021-06-17T14:02:23-04:00

You can call us at 800-252-7894 and we can see if we can find your pet’s microchip ID record by your phone number or email address. If we cannot, we suggest you have your vet scan the microchip to get the number, and then we’d be happy to look it up. FYI, Banfield pet hospitals have universal scanners and are happy to scan a pet a no charge.
