Is the microchip a GPS?

A microchip is NOT a GPS or tracking device because it has no power source. Instead, a microchip contains a small antenna that can only be read by a microchip scanner commonly used by veterinarians, shelters, and animal control. When the scanner passes over the microchip, it reads the microchip ID number. It is not exactly the same, but similar to scanning a barcoded item at the grocery store.

How can I see that an implanted microchip works?

Once your pet’s AKC Reunite microchip is implanted, ask your veterinarian or pet professional to scan your pet and then show you how the scanner read the microchip’s unique ID number. If your lost pet is ever found and scanned for a microchip, pet professionals refer to the American Animal Hospital Association’s PetMicrochipLookup.org database, so they know what microchip recovery service to contact.
