AKC Pet Disaster Relief Rolls Out Help for Pets in San Juan County

AKC Reunite, the largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service provider in the United States, is pleased to announce that San Juan County, NM is now equipped with an AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer that will be available to dispatch to any disaster scene that needs assistance sheltering pets.

AKC Pet Disaster Relief, a national program that is dedicated to keeping pets and their owners safe in response to natural or civil disasters, joined forces with local American Kennel Club dog clubs and dog lovers to present an emergency trailer to the Aztec Animal Care and Control in Aztec, NM.

“We are grateful to AKC Reunite, and the various AKC dog clubs and organizations that contributed to provide us with such a critical tool for our community.”

The AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers help to create a safe, temporary home-base for at least 65 pets during the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared. The trailers house and deliver essential animal care items including crates and carriers, AKC Reunite microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip scanner, bowls, collars and leashes as well as fans, lighting and a generator, cleaning supplies and maintenance items. These supplies can be used as co-location shelters, where people can evacuate with their pets, as well as emergency animal shelters for displaced animals.

“This is the 86th trailer donated through the AKC Pet Disaster Relief program. This trailer will provide important resources to help the Aztec Animal Care and Control team quickly care for their community pets in times of need,” said Tom Sharp, AKC Reunite CEO. “Safe, effective pet sheltering solutions are crucial during an emergency evacuation or immediately following a disaster, and AKC Reunite is pleased to offer this trailer as a vital tool.”

The purchase of the trailer was made possible by donations from Rio Grande Kennel Club, Durango Kennel Club, Coronado Kennel Club, Long Leash on Life, The Village Mercantile, Dog Judges Association of America, the State of New Mexico, and AKC Reunite, the nation’s largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service.

“We are grateful to AKC Reunite, and the various AKC dog clubs and organizations that contributed to provide us with such a critical tool for our community,” said Tina Roper of the Aztec Animal Care and Control. “Our organization is now better prepared to help the pets in our community during times of disaster”.

“Our club is thrilled to be part of the group that brought AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailers to Aztec Animal Care and Control and Lea County Emergency Management,” said Bob De Young of the Rio Grande Kennel Club. “The trailers are helpful resources that are strategically positioned to provide necessary supplies to assist communities in New Mexico, Southwestern Colorado and beyond if disaster strikes.”

“The Durango Kennel Club is very pleased that the AKC Reunite trailer has arrived in Aztec. It will be available to the 4 corners region in the event of a disaster such as the one experienced during the 416 Fire in the Durango area in 2018,” said Durango Kennel Club President Barbara Schwartz. “While we hope that we never have to use it, we are grateful to have this asset in our area.”
