WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET GETS LOST

Most pet owners believe their pet will never leave their side, so it is hard to imagine it ever getting lost. Unfortunately the unexpected happens. If your pet is ever missing, follow these tips to help with a speedy reunion.

By taking all the necessary precautions and following these tips, your chances of being reunited with your pet drastically increase.

Step One

BEGIN SEARCH

Before your pet has time to roam too far, immediately begin searching within a 2 mile radius from where your pet was last seen.

Step One

GATHER NEIGHBORS

Gather neighbors and friends to search the area your pet was last seen. Don't forget your pet's favorite treat or toy and call out words they respond to, such as "toy" or "treat" along with their name.

Step One

CONTACT AKC REUNITE

Contact AKC Reunite's 24/7 Reuniters Helpline at 800-252-7894 to let us know your pet is lost and so we can confirm your contact information is up to date. You can also activate a Lost Pet Alert to shelters, veterinarians and pet lovers in your immediate area.

Step One

PRINT POSTERS

Create and print lost pet posters including your pet's name, photo and phone #. (AKC Reunite makes it easy with our Lost Pet Alert). Next display the posters around the area your pet was last seen, including vets and local parks.

Step One

CONTACT SHELTERS

Contact all of your local shelters, humane societies and the police to report your pet missing with an accurate description of your pet: hair/coat length and color - don't forget special markings: size; age; ear type: pointed, long, short, droopy. Continue to call the shelter back on a daily basis and repeat this information since shelter staff can change from day to day.

Step One

EXPAND YOUR SEARCH

Visit local shelters and humane societies to see if your pet is there on a daily basis. Keep optimistic and REMEMBER, if your pet is microchipped, the chances of your pet returning home increase dramatically!

HELP KEEP YOUR PET SAFE

There are steps you can take now to improve your chances of being reunited with your pet if it ever gets lost.

PET ID AND ENROLLMENT

Make sure your pet has a collar tag and is enrolled in AKC Reunite's lost pet recovery service. That way if your pet is ever lost, Good Samaritans can call us at 800-252-7894 found on your pet's AKC Reunite collar tag and we will begin contacting you and all of your emergency contacts to reunite you and your pet!

PROTECT YOUR PET WITH A MICROCHIP

Microchips are necessary in case your pet's collar breaks, or falls off, or its tag is lost. When found, a veterinarian or shelter or Animal Control can scan for a microchip and call us so we can reunite you and your pet. Be sure to check your pet’s microchip enrollment information regularly to make sure it is current and up-to-date.
