AKC Pet Disaster Relief Rolls Out Help for Pets in Mission Viejo, CA

AKC Reunite, the largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service provider in the United States, is pleased to announce that Mission Viejo, CA is now equipped with an AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer that will be available to dispatch to any disaster scene that needs assistance sheltering pets. After a record-setting year of wildfires in California in 2020, this Pet Disaster Relief trailer is the 16th that the state is now equipped with and will contribute to any future animal sheltering needs.

AKC Pet Disaster Relief, a national program that is dedicated to keeping pets and their owners safe in response to natural or civil disasters, joined forces with local American Kennel Club dog clubs and dog lovers to present this emergency trailer to the City of Mission Viejo Animal Services.

“Our organization is extremely grateful to AKC Reunite and the Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association of OC for providing this crucial and lifesaving tool for our community.”

The purchase of the trailer was made possible by donations from the Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association of OC, and AKC Reunite, the nation’s largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service.

“The Mission Viejo trailer is the 91st trailer donated through the AKC Pet Disaster Relief program. The trailer will provide crucial resources to help the City of Mission Viejo Animal Services team quickly care for pets in the case of a disaster,” said Tom Sharp, AKC Reunite CEO. “Safe, effective pet sheltering solutions are critical during an emergency evacuation or immediately following a disaster, and we are pleased to offer this trailer as an important resource.”

The AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers help to create a safe, temporary home-base for at least 65 pets during the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared. The trailers house and deliver essential animal care items including crates and carriers, AKC Reunite microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip scanner, bowls, collars and leashes as well as fans, lighting and a generator, cleaning supplies and maintenance items. These supplies can be used as co-location shelters, where people can evacuate with their pets, as well as emergency animal shelters for displaced animals.

“Our organization is extremely grateful to AKC Reunite and the Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association of OC for providing this crucial and lifesaving tool for our community,” stated Kyle Werner of the City of Mission Viejo. “We’re confident that with this additional resource, Mission Viejo will now be better prepared to assist pet owners and their pets in the case of a disaster.”

“The Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association of OC is pleased to be able to contribute to the purchase of an important resource like the AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer,” said Susan Hamil of the Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association of OC. “The trailer is a vital tool for the Mission Viejo Animal Services team to better assist their community if disaster strikes.”
