WHAT IS A MICROCHIP?

AKC Reunite microchips have a greenish tint because they are manufactured with bioglass.

If a microchip is made of clear material or a polymer, it is NOT bioglass! Microchips made from different plastic parts, including sheaths, that are melted together run the risk of leaking. Moisture or any leakage can lead to microchip failure in the future.

A microchip with clear glass is not made with bioglass. Instead of laser sealing the capsule, the entire transponder is heated during the sealing process. Overheating the electronic transponder can impact the longevity of the microchip. There's also a likelihood clear glass contains lead.

FIVE REASONS TO MICROCHIP

  1. Collars break and pet id tags can fall off; some pets don’t even wear collars.
  2. Just because your pet lives inside there’s no guarantee of its safety. Linda Lord DVM, of Ohio State University, reports:
    • According to her 2009 study, pets with microchips are up to 20 times more likely to be returned to their owners.
    • 40% of lost cats in one community were indoor-only cats and only 19% of cats reported lost had any sort of identification.
  3. We don’t like to think about it, but disasters can happen displacing pets from their homes and owners.
  4. Microchips are permanent identification that can help prove ownership if a pet is stolen.
  5. Microchips are required when traveling internationally. Learn more.

WHY A PET’S MICROCHIP NEEDS TO BE ENROLLED WITH AKC REUNITE

An unenrolled microchip is like a blank collar tag – it can be useless to help identify and reunite a pet.

Animal Shelters and Animal Control organizations rely on a dedicated website, aaha.org/petmicrochiplookup, to reunite microchipped pets with their owners. This website lets shelters know if a pet’s microchip is enrolled with a Pet Recovery Service to get the pet’s owner’s information.

Due to stretched staff and budget cuts, not all but some, shelters stop searching for the pet owner if there is no readily available microchip enrollment information on aaha.org/petmicrochiplookup. This means AKC Reunite may never be contacted to track down the pet owner through the microchip purchaser. Instead the pet may be put up for adoption. Or, if a pet is injured, it could be denied emergency care because there is no one to pay for its treatment.

GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR MICROCHIPPING PROGRAM

AKC Reunite offers two different programs based on how a pet’s microchip will be enrolled. You can choose between our Prepaid Microchip Program and the Enrollment Rewards Program. To find out which is best for you and your budget, you will first need to determine whether or not you will ensure every microchipped pet is enrolled with AKC Reunite – or instead leave microchip enrollment up to the pet owner.
