AKC Reunite Helps Bring Two Stolen Dogs Home to Their Families

AKC Reunite, the largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service provider in the United States is pleased to announce that two families have plenty to be thankful for this holiday season after being reunited with their beloved stolen dogs thanks to their AKC Reunite microchips.

A Tampa, FL family’s home was broken into earlier this week, and Christmas gifts along with their new puppy, an 8-week-old Pitbull mix were stolen. Police have returned the puppy back to the family after being recovered and scanned for a microchip.

“Pets with microchips are up to 20 times more likely to be reunited with their owners.”

In Chesapeake, VA, another family’s home was broken into where a safe, jewelry, guns, a pick-up truck, and their family dog, a Yorkshire Terrier were stolen. The dog was sold to a woman who then realized the dog may have been stolen and contacted the owner. The dog’s owner was accompanied by police and animal control escorts to be reunited with the dog. Their local animal control carried a mobile microchip scanner, confirming the dog was hers and he was returned to the family.

A microchip is a radio-frequency identification transponder that carries a unique identification number and is roughly the size of a grain of rice. When the microchip is scanned by a vet or shelter, it transmits the ID number. The microchip is injected under the loose skin between your dog’s shoulder blades and can be done at a vet’s office.

“Pets with microchips are up to 20 times more likely to be reunited with their owners,” said Tom Sharp, AKC Reunite President and CEO. “We are delighted that these two dogs, along with tens of thousands of other pets each year, were reunited with their families thanks to AKC Reunite microchips.”

Protecting pets with microchip identification is crucial. Collars and tags can be removed so it is important to have permanent ID with a microchip. Keeping contact information current with the microchip recovery service provider also helps streamline the process to contact the owner should a missing or stolen pet be recovered. AKC Reunite recovery service has a team of pet recovery specialists that reach out to the pet owner by phone, email, text and mail – plus calls all alternate emergency contacts on file – to help reunite pets as quickly as possible.
