Gordy’s Firework Scare!

REUNITED: In 14 hours

In the days leading up to July 4th, fireworks were set off near Gordy, the 11-month-old English Springer Spaniel. Out of fear, he took off! With the help of AKC Reunite’s Lost Pet Alert broadcast and a large search party, Gordy was reunited before the Independence Day holiday!

“For me, the biggest thing I want to stress is that firework danger CAN happen,” said Dawn, Gordy’s owner. “I’ve been a dog owner for years, worked 10 years doing rescue, and even dabbled in teaching dog obedience. But, with a houseful of boys, who make lots of loud noise, it never once occurred to us that Gordy would have an intense fear of fireworks!”

Unfortunately, while outside with the other family dog, fireworks nearby were set off and although the family has an underground fence, it recently endured some damaged, and was turned off. And before Gordy could even be corralled, he ran right through the invisible barrier and escaped!

“On July 1, my husband and youngest son returned from a baseball game and cookout and they let the dogs loose into the backyard,” recalled Dawn. “My husband stepped outside with both dogs (like we do EVERY day) and within a minute, there was a firework pop. My husband immediately called the dogs and they started towards the door, but then a loud EXPLOSION sounded from the yard behind our wooded area and creek… and Gordy took off at a dead run.”

Gordy’s determination and fear could not have stopped his progress out of the yard, not even his own family could redirect him! Immediately, friends and family began searching by car and on foot for Gordy and even notified AKC Reunite of his missing status. They also activated the Lost Pet Alert broadcast so people knew to be on the lookout for Gordy. Fortunately, Gordy was spotted several hours later by a neighbor and was soon reunited!

“My neighbor’s six year old son begged their family to go out one more time and search with a bag of treats,” said Dawn. “And all of sudden, there was our dog about a mile from our home. He was apprehensive at first and then hopped right in their car [and was brought home]!”

“I’m so grateful for a second chance — however, I don’t know if this boy will ever see outside of lead again!”
