Jasper’s July Escape!

REUNITED: In 8 weeks!

Jasper, the primarily outdoor Domestic Short-Hair Cat, disappeared without a trace in July. Thanks to his microchip enrolled with AKC Reunite, he could be reunited weeks later!

“Mid-July my boy Jasper went missing,” said Stephanie, Jasper’s owner. “We have three cats that are primarily outdoor cats, but they stay very close to our yard and at the very least within our neighborhood.”

Unfortunately, Jasper wandered too far from home and couldn’t find his way back. Stephanie searched relentlessly, notified AKC Reunite, updated social media, and posted flyers throughout the neighborhood and at clinics around town hoping to spread the word. Although Jasper had a collar and a bandana on when he disappeared, no immediate sightings were reported!

“I started to accept the fact that he maybe wasn’t coming home,” said Stephanie. “After 6 or so weeks of nothing, I was just hoping maybe someone had him and was loving on him somewhere else. Thankfully, at around 7 weeks of Jasper missing, a man messaged me on Facebook saying he saw Jasper still wearing his bandana, but the location was nearly 3 miles from my home, on the opposite side of the railroad tracks and the river!”

The good Samaritan decided after seeing Jasper a few times that he would try to set a safe-trap to hopefully lure Jasper in. But Jasper was smart and avoided the trap altogether.

“He had messaged me on a Wednesday night saying he set the trap and saw Jasper, still wearing his bandana, watching him while he set it but he wouldn’t come close enough to catch him,” recalled Stephanie. “I woke up to that message, headed out to find the trap that was set and check it, but with no luck, I headed back home.”

To Stephanie’s surprise, she was called by a veterinary clinic in town on her way home. Jasper’s microchip had been scanned! With a quick call to AKC Reunite, we were able to provide Stephanie’s information and kickstart Jasper’s reunion.

“One of the vet clinics in town called and said they had a cat turned in that was scanned with my information,” said Stephanie. “Needless to say, I ugly cried on my way to get him and on my way home. Other than being skinny and a few scabs, he’s healthy and alive! God is so good.”

“It was truly a blessing that he made it home after 8 weeks, still wearing his bandana and 3 miles from home. Getting him microchipped earlier this year was the smartest thing we’ve done!”
