Road Tripping with your Pet!

Helpful safety tips for a pet-friendly road trip with your BestPetEver!

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

  • If you are traveling outside of the US, a Microchip is Required– your pet’s microchip is key to obtaining your pet’s International Health Certificate. Learn more about finding a USDA veterinarian and the certification by clicking here.
  • Check your records with AKC Reunite – flight chances increase when pets are in unknown surroundings, so now it is critically important to make sure your records are up to date with AKC Reunite. We will call, text and email you and your Alternate Contacts on file when your pet is found to help reunite you as quickly as possible.
  • Have pet documents — always travel with your pet microchip identification, health certificate/rabies vaccination, and a photo of you and your pet readily available in the event you are separated during a pit stop or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Pack a pet travel kit — pack food, water, bowls, a leash, first aid kit, medications and waste clean-up supplies. And be sure to bring their favorite toy as well!
  • Prepare your pet — not all pets enjoy car rides so take time to speak with your pet’s veterinarian for help curbing your four-legged friend’s anxiety before your cross-country trip!

ON THE ROAD

  • Buckle up your pet — whether you have a kennel or a pet harness, buckle up your pet so they remain in one location and do not distract you as you navigate and drive.
  • Roll the windows up — while many dogs love the window down, eye and ear injuries from road debris and wind speeds can harm your pet. So, think twice before lowering the windows!
  • Never leave pet alone — never leave your pet alone in a parked car during a pit stop! First of all, heat exhaustion can strike and be fatal for your pet. Further, a passerby may attempt to free your pet thinking they’re in danger during warm temperatures!  Learn more about pet theft dangers by clicking here.
